Passing through: Soko

Dreamy, brooding French songstress Soko is coming to Tulsa for a show at Hillman’s Garage on Sunday, Oct. 5, with Oklahoma City fuzzsmiths Skating Polly and Tulsa’s own grungegurls, The Daddyo’s. (Check out the event's Facebook page.)

We asked Kylie Hastings and Kylie Slabby of The Daddyo’s—who are Soko fanatics—to ask her a few questions before she arrives. The result is a conversation about touring, inspiration, and food.

The Daddyo’s: Tacos or Pizza?

Soko: BOTH! As long as they’re vegan!

D: Mary Kate or Ashley?

S: WHO?!

D: What’s the funniest experience you’ve had with a fan while on tour or playing a show?

S: Well, the last two shows I played, two random people in two different cities asked me to sign their ass… Shit’s getting weird!

D: Best tour memory?

S: Playing a sold out show at Union Chapel in London. I cried my eyes out because everyone was singing along in this beautiful church. It was probably one of the best shows I’ve ever played.

D: What’s your favorite condiment?

S: Is guacamole a condiment? [Editor's note: Damn right it is.]

D: Favorite movie?

S: "Hook" and "The Red Shoes."

D: Favorite Daniel Johnston song?

S: “Honey I Sure Miss You.”

D: Where does your musical inspiration come from?

S: From being a total music nerd and punk at heart. And being the biggest fan of Robert Smith and Morrissey, and loving to hear souls cracking on records.

D: Lyrical inspiration?

S: My twisted dark thoughts and all—and my constant contradictions between wanting to disappear but also wanting to be happy to the fullest.

D: What’s your biggest pet peeve?

S: I hate nose rings! And also, people with hair coming out of their noses. I have a weird thing with noses it seems.

D: What are your expectations of playing in Tulsa?

S: I hope I make everyone cry an ocean of tears that I can swim in. And I hope I get the biggest hug puddle on the planet. And that someone brings me vegan gluten free sugar free cake! Also, I can’t wait to see my friends Skating Polly play. I love them so much.

So there you have it, dear reader. Bake a vegan, gluten-free, sugar-free cake, trim your nose hairs, and get to Hillman’s Garage, 1016 E 4th St, on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 10 p.m. for Soko, Skating Polly, and The Daddyo’s.
