Trey Anastasio Band plays Tulsa for the first time

The Trey Anastasio Band made its first-ever stop in Tulsa on March 3 with a rollicking two-set performance at Cain's Ballroom that honored a recently fallen comrade as well as a couple of Tulsa music titans.

The Phish frontman and his eight-piece side project opened the show with a cover of "Basically Frightened," a tribute to jam rock legend Col. Bruce Hampton, who collapsed onstage the previous night at a birthday concert in his honor and later died. A typically upbeat and joyous show followed, highlights of which included several Phish crossovers ("Sand," "First Tube" and "Gotta Jiboo" the clear standouts); TAB favorites such as "Cayman Review" and "Alive Again”; and covers of Bob Marley, Gorillaz, and Led Zeppelin. 

But the biggest thrill for the crowd at Cain's were surprise salutes to two of Tulsa's favorite sons—a first-set run-through of Leon Russell's "Delta Lady" and a roof-raising encore of TAB's "Push On 'Til the Day" that peppered in spirited renditions of "Call Me the Breeze" and "Cocaine" by J.J. Cale.
